Name: Daniel Vernon

Position: Program Coordinator

Originally from Southaven, MS. Graduated with a BS in Health, Phys Ed, and Recreation from Delta State University in Cleveland, MS.

How did you end up in Alaska and how long you have been here: After graduating from DSU, I was actively pursuing post-grad education and was in search of a graduate assistant position that would allow me to take that next step. I was contacted by the amazing recreation program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and knew immediately that I wanted to be in Alaska. In 2015, I was offered a graduate assistant position within the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Department of Recreation, Adventure, and Wellness (DRAW) in charge of the Nanook Intramural Program. While at UAF, I met my wife, Ally, and we decided to move to Anchorage once my contract expired in 2017.

Professional Experience:

  • 2011-2015 – Delta State University Intramurals and Outdoor Program
  • 2013 – Founded Delta State University Student Recreation Association
  • 2013-2015 – National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Region II Engagement Coordinator, Region II
  • 2014-2015 – Delta State University Men’s Basketball, Assistant Coach
  • 2015-2017 – University of Alaska Fairbanks, Graduate Assistant – DRAW
  • 2017 – University of Alaska Anchorage Men’s Basketball, Assistant Coach

What part of your job at Anchorage Sports are you most excited about? I love providing recreation opportunities to anyone who is willing to take part. I believe everyone should be afforded the opportunity to take part in the fulfilment that sport and recreation brings. Anchorage has such a diverse community that can all experience the fun, unity, and competitiveness that Anchorage Sports Association provides. My aim is to provide high-quality, organized sports to as many people as I can in the Anchorage communities and beyond.

What is your favorite sport to play? As a multi-sport athlete, it’s hard to pick favorites, but basketball is very near and dear to my heart.

Anything else you want people to know: I’m an avid outdoorsman and love fly fishing. I’m still learning about all of the great experiences Alaska has to offer. My office is always open to anyone who may have stories and input on this great state. For any sport or non-sport related discussions, please come by anytime!
